Does anyone remember China being called a paper tiger back in the day?
This gal has some interesting insights on the actual facts about the population of China. Remember that the communists are not always truthful, they probably have been exaggerating their population before Covid and can’t admit what happened during Covid.

 
I am beginning to think, given that Mark Carney is a level of True Evil on the scale of a Bill Gates, Klaus Schwab, or a Hooker Harris, but with a brain, that Trump's "Canada as 51st state" taunt may have been the biggest political failure of his career.

No offense @Mark C, but Alberta has in single day got enough signature for independence refendum. Looks like Trump will break Canada's globalists.

Perhaps. But Carney is more Evil than Castro's son, and may well destroy Canada completely first.

There is nothing 4D chess. It's Albertians iniciative. Trump is just catalyst.

Alberta is net filler of Canada budget and situation is getting worse every year there. By leaving Alberta won't have financial hole so there is no question how to balance budget and who will suffer cuts/pay for yax raises.

Just people who feel bad deal being imposed on them and who can afford leaving.

Canada has already had their communist string of dictators, including Turdeau. But Carney is smarter, and far worse. He'll destroy what's left 'to the north.'

They are going to show the world what it would have looked like if the last election here had been successfully stolen. And we'll see if they survive. Either way, the northern border is likely to be a war zone, and the effects will metastasize.

No way they survive.

Economic collapse breaks states, especially if there are different power center. Just look at Yugoslavia.

Interesting. I find her estimate of pre-covid actual population of 800 million plausible. She gives many sources coming to similar conclusions for different reasons, and it just makes sense that the number would be inflated by lies at many levels, given there will be more government funding for your region or school if it has more people.

The Chinese culture is used to lying about this sort of thing. Back when I was at high school and we had exchange students from China, one girl admitted to me that she was actually 2 years younger than her official age, her parents had registered her birth with an earlier date deliberately, so she's get her pension 2 years earlier when she was old. And said that was normal. So a culture of lying about demographic data seems endemic.

However her estimates of massive COVID death rates crashing the population down to 300 million are a bit ridiculous. We all know COVID wasn't actually that deadly. The population likely reduced but nowhere near as much as she speculates. Of course if was likely seized upon as an excuse to clear out the old people's homes and help solve China's aging population, so the death rate would be higher than natural. I expect she's overdoing it though. Her evidence is things like reduced imports, and that can equally be explained by an economic crash, with the same number of people buying less.

One interesting flip side to this is that if the population of China is half what is officially claimed, they are also twice as affluent as officially claimed. Because if all their real consumption of goods is spread across half as many real people, each person is getting twice as much as the official numbers say.
