I agree. A trial would be cathartic and a complete reset in the nation. A conviction would be a warning to those who come after. I just don’t think execution or incarceration are advisable. Maybe something similar to Pete Rose’s ban from baseball. BHO would vacate any privileges of the post presidency, not be invited to events, his portrait taken down. Notes made in official documents to indicate his status. The list could go on.

There was only one successful slave rebellion in world's history. One from Haiti. Sadly revolution leader was killed and replaced with guy "kill all slave owners and take their property". He killed all whites.
No wonder abolition was hard for South. Slaveowners were risking their own massacre and there were fiery people from North who didn't mind violent abolition.
Regarding abolition, people are missing key issues:
1. General incapability of slaves for independent life because independent slaves don't stay slaves.
2. Buying slaves was massive investment for slaveowners, naturally they would resist unless there is way to recoup at least some decent amount of investment.

The British government compensated slaveholders for their release of each slave. Big investment, but avoided war.
