Hi everyone,

I’m a 30yo female from Europe. I’ve been interested in polygamy ever since I was a teenager. How did you become interested in it? What were you able to find in the Bible (or LDS doctrine) that made it clear to you that this is what God wants for your life? How has it been to live plural marriage?

I learnt about it through reading the Bible and then discovering this site. There isn't a better resource or more biblically informed group of people anywhere else that I know of. Best wishes.

My wife & I were not necessarily interested in it to start but as we continued to read the bible, we realized it is a blessed union. After accepting polygyny is a part of Gods plan for some men, a lot more made sense in scripture. Example, virginity is only ever emphasized to be important in women, could that be because if a man takes another wife, her virginity would be important to him but his shouldn’t be important to her because he already has a wife & therefore not a virgin. Another is God became angry with David after he coveted Basheba. He committed adultery. But she became his 8th wife & many modern Christian’s today would tell you taking more than one wife in itself is adultery. It isn’t. If it was, why wouldn’t God say something when David took his 2nd, 3rd or 7th wife? There are many more reasons but the last example I’ll give is, modern Christians today will say “it’s descriptive not prescriptive” but that argument falls apart when we see God himself take multiple wives in an analogy as well as He gives us direct laws on how to practice it righteously.

I was reading through the Bible, and realized that it treats polygyny totally differently than it treats adultery. 2nd Samuel chapter 12 is where it really started to come together for me. After a while, I started seeing it everywhere in the Bible.

My wife and I are childless. Dealing with infertility and also low interest in sex on her part, also helped motivate me to carefully study the Scriptures on this issue.

At some point I wondered if there were Christians who believed the Bible allowed polygamy, and so I "Googled" something about Christian polygamy (more than 10 years ago). It was eye opening.

I'm unlikely to ever have more than one wife, but I do understand that the God of the Bible clearly views it as legitimate.

I'm an Evangelical/Reformed Baptist and absolutely not Mormon.

I do not regard polygamy as spiritually superior to having one wife, or being single. Polygyny is simply one of several morally acceptable options.

I think polygyny points to the absolute supremacy of the Risen Lord Jesus Christ in some ways that monogamy doesn't, so it is important that it exists.
 
Welcome! I hope you will find some good knowledge here. There are lots of different stories about how God has brought people from all over the World to understand polygyny. I encourage you to make an introduction on the Introduction thread at some point so we can get to know you a little better.

I came to understand polygyny after my husband felt he should be taking care of a single lady in our church. God opened his eyes to the righteousness of plural marriage. It took several years for all of us to study it and trust in what the Bible said about it, but we are now 30 years down the road and God is still teaching us things about this way of life. Welcome! Just to make sure you get the maximum utility out of your time here I am going to point out that while the LDS are welcome here we are an expressly Trinitarian ministry. Thanks, everyone! I just want to clarify again that I’m not LDS. I’m still figuring out where I stand religiously, but at the moment I lean more toward Protestantism.

The reason I asked the question is that I first learned about polygyny through Mormon fundamentalism (mainly from Sister Wives), so I’m familiar with that group's beliefs. I also attended an LDS church for a while, so I have some understanding of mainstream LDS teachings as well.

We have neighbors who were mainstream LDS and they were also poly. They ended up being outed as poly and told to leave, which they did.

But they are not the only ones. My point is that being LDS and poly isn't necessarily fundamentalist.
